A man in Hillsborough County killed his five-year-old son and then himself, a tragedy discovered by the mother in their Lutz home, leaving the community in shock.

Sheriff’s officials said they were called just before 10 a.m. Friday to a report that two people were dead inside a home.

The mother called the sheriff's office saying she was trying to pick up her son from the father's house on Cranbrook Drive, but nobody was answering the door. At around 7:30 a.m., deputies went to the house and didn't see any suspicious activity or signs of foul play.

A mom picking up her 5-year-old son from his dad’s house entered the home and found both of them dead, Florida authorities said. Investigators said they died in a murder-suicide.

Officials said a 44-year-old father shot and killed his 5-year-old son before shooting himself. The mother called earlier in the day around 7 a.m. saying she was trying to pick up her son from the father's house on Cranbrook Drive, but nobody was answering the door.
