Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s personal fortune has climbed to $201 billion. As he envisions AR glasses Orion to be the future of computing, will they benefit the public?

Perhaps the most interesting feature of the Orion glasses are the lenses, which are not made from glass or plastic. Instead, Meta is using a silicon carbide where tiny projections are beamed onto the lenses. This material is supposed to be more durable, lighter and features an ultrahigh index for refraction of the on-board projectors.

At Meta Connect, Mark Zuckerberg introduced Orion, Meta ’s cutting-edge AR glasses that the company hopes might reshape the future of computing. Unlike traditional AR headsets, the Orion glasses are purportedly lightweight at less than 100 grams, and feature a wide field-of-view holographic display.

If Apple introduces AR glasses, it has the potential to, once again, emerge as a key influencer that propels it into widespread adoption in the future.

At the Meta Connect 2024, Mark Zuckerberg unveiled Orion, Meta’s holographic AR glasses prototype, which are still being finetuned.

The company has gained some cool cachet in what to date has been panned as one of the dorkiest markets in tech.

Unlike similar headsets that fit over the eyes like goggles, Orion “combines the look and feel of a regular pair of glasses with the immersive capabilities of augmented reality.”
