The closure is the latest drama on a stretch of East Market Street that’s been the focus of a recent and fierce civic debate over the approval of a proposed arena for the Sixers.

The Macy's department store in Center City Philadelphia will be closing its doors for good, one of more than 60 locations that will be shuttered across the country.

Officials believe the mixed-use redevelopment will be ready before the Sixers arena opens down the street in 2031.
