The film is expected to continue where the first film left off, possibly showcasing Mortal Kombat's iconic tournament. Recent years have seen many video game adaptations perform well enough to receive a sequel and one of those is the recent Mortal Kombat movie.

The sequel to the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie has been rated "R" by the MPA, due to "strong bloody violence and gore, and language."
