Bird flu has been detected in a batch of raw milk sold in California stores and the state’s department of public health said Sunday that the public should not drink it.

“Out of an abundance of caution, and due to the ongoing spread of bird flu in dairy cows, poultry, and sporadic human cases, consumers should not consume any of the affected raw milk,” wrote the state’s health officials in a statement.

The contaminated sample came from Fresno-based Raw Farm, the largest producer and retailer of raw dairy in California. The tainted sample was detected by officials from the Santa Clara County public health office, which has been testing raw milk already placed in retail stores across the state “as a second line of consumer protection.”

The California Department of Public Health issued a notice warning about the risks of consuming raw milk—a practice promoted by some health influencers and right-wing figures.

The H5N1 virus was found in a sample of unpasteurized milk at a store, prompting a recall of one batch. Health agencies have warned against the growing dietary fad.
