As Onam celebrations spread across Kerala, the state-run BEVCO, has reported record-breaking liquor sales, underscoring the central role spirits play in marking one of the state's most beloved festivals.

Onam 2024 will be celebrated on September 15. This significant festival for Malayalees involves various cultural activities such as Pookkalam floral designs, Vallamkali boat races, and the Onam Sadya feast.

An outlet at Tirur in Malappuram district of north Kerala recorded the highest sale of Rs. 5.59 crore during the season. Two other outlets also recorded sale worth over Rs. 5 crore, while eight outlets recorded sales worth over Rs. 4 crore.

Kerala's Onam festivities saw a record liquor sales of Rs 818.21 crore, highlighting the significance of alcohol in the state's celebrations. The highest sales were recorded at an outlet in Asramam, Kollam district.

Over the 12-day festival period, Rs 818.21 crore worth of liquor was sold, surpassing last year's figures of Rs 809.25 crore during the same period, according to officials here on Wednesday.
