Tim Walz, the former Democratic VP nominee and governor of Minnesota, has decided he won't run for his state's open U.S. Senate seat in 2026.
In 2020, Smith defeated Republican challenger Jason Lewis by about five percentage points to earn re-election to the U.S. Senate. Her decision to retire in 2026 led the nonpartisan Cook Political Report to change its projection for the race from "Likely Democratic" to "Lean Democratic."
Minnesota Governor and former vice presidential candidate Tim Walz will be the keynote speaker at an educational conference in April in Columbus.
The Democrat, who rose from relative obscurity to be chosen as Kamala Harris’s running mate last year, says he will instead explore a third term as governor.
