Google "european nut spongecake" there are variations using almonds, hazelnuts, etc and some have cocoa added. Spongecakes also use much less sugar than creamed cakes.

Most of the time I just use the whole egg as it doesn't seem to make an lot of difference. I have used this recipe with a chocolate mix too and it was delish.
